We know that issuers of Lehman's credit default swaps will have to pay out hundreds of billions of dollars. But who will actually have to pay that out?

The Times of London writes today:

"About 350 banks and investors are thought to have insured an estimated $400 billion of Lehman’s debt through complex derivatives, known as credit default swaps. These include Pacific Investment Management, the manager of the world’s largest bond fund, Citadel, the US hedge fund, and American International Group, the insurer that the US Government recently bailed out with two loans totalling about $123 billion."

Derivatives are financial instruments whose values depend on the value of other underlying financial instruments. The main types of derivatives are futures, forwards, options and swaps.

The OTC derivative market is the largest market for derivatives, and is unregulated. According to the Bank for International Settlements, the total outstanding national amount is $596 trillion (as of December 2007)^[1].

Swedish Vattenfall to Invest in Polish Lignite Project

"Local government representatives from the Legnica, Lubin and Ścinawa administrative districts in the Lower Silesia voivodship in southwestern Poland have sent a letter to Prime Minister Donald Tusk in protest against a plan to exploit the massive lignite reserves in their region, and to use them to fire a huge new power station. The project is gaining momentum, and local and foreign companies, such as Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE) and Vattenfall of Sweden, have stated their interest in it. The estimated cost of the project is zł.7.7 billion."

Reindeer herders march on Stockholm

Irate reindeer herders from Sweden's indigenous Sami population took to the streets of Stockholm on Friday to protest against Norway's alleged attempts to force the animals from their traditional pastures.

"This is completely unreal. We can't live with a state that terrorizes and hunts us, despite the fact that we are on our own land. We have lived on this land and cultivated it for thousands of years, long before the creation of the Norwegian state," said Saarivuoma chairman Per Anders Nutti in a statement.

The European Union (EU) is pushing hard for 76 African, Caribbean and Pacific countries to sign unfair trade deals before the end of this year.

From July, the new man in charge at the European Union is Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Sócrates. We want to tell him that trade could lift millions of people out of poverty if the rules were fair.

The EU promised that the interests of poor countries would be at the heart of their trade deals. But current proposals put the EU’s own economic interests above those of millions of the world’s poorest people and their environment.

The negotiations are at a critical stage. Now is the time to tell the EU that these trade deals must focus on reducing poverty. Your voice can make a difference.

Please ask Prime Minister Socrates to use his influence to make these trade agreements fair.

Eight million people are in urgent need of emergency aid; that figure includes over two million who are displaced within the country, and more than two million refugees. Many more are living in poverty, without basic services, and increasingly threatened by disease and malnutrition. Despite the constraints imposed by violence, the government of Iraq, the United Nations, and international donors can do more to deliver humanitarian assistance to reduce unnecessary suffering. If people’s basic needs are left unattended, this will only serve to further destabilize the country.
